Christo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) atop Corcavado Mountain. We met Claire, Jess and Emily cos they were looking for 1-2 more people to taxi up there with them. Ended up spending the next couple of days with them, today we went to the beach to recover from last night...awesome time! Beautiful weather, about 22 degrees so not too hot but nice, and awesome surf that chucks you around... we had a great time playing pictionary in the sand, and made a treasure hunt for sal to find her buried sandals. About to head out to a street party then tomorrow we have england and brazil both playing, it's going to be carnage! Then on sunday we're off to isle grande, which is this really nice island apparently. Emily is off tomorrow morning and will be missed, Claire we think left today which is also a shame, she wasnt having the best time here and didnt get a chance to say goodbye to her. Think she was really missing ba (buenos aires) though, and she[ll be heading back there soon i reckon. More pics....!!

Yo
Its almost 5 in the morning. We went to Christo Rendentor and Paia de Sucaro today, with Jess, Claire and Emily, who we met at breakfast. It was a fucking cool day. Lots of awesome photos which I will upload when I get around to it. Went out to some club down the road and am now very drunk. Our hopes of carrying on the party are currently all but extinguished, but we made it back and I am more or less happy.

Exploring Rio
Wednesday, June 28, 2006
Today we had a walk around Copacabana and Ipenema, the beaches and the shops. Sal found several shoe shops, then on our way back we decided to go into one of the tiny cafe-bars down a little side street and try our luck with our minimal portugese. I managed to order a couple of beers, then we spotted cachaça in a beaten up wooden barrel fixed to the bar. At only $R1/shot we couldn´t resist! It tasted kind of like tequila, I actually found it wasn´t too bad but it went right to our heads..... the guy behind the bar was really cool and despite an almost total language barrier, we managed to have a laugh with him.

Sal´s gone to get an early night so I´m going to try and find out more info about the border crossing between Brazil and Peru.

Rio de Janeiro

Landed in Rio!!

Getting here took a long time... partly cos of the slow ass bus down to Heathrow - I left Oban at 8am and got to Heathrow at 3 in the morning, then my flight was at 7. However I was a lucky bastard and got a business class upgrade on the Madrid->Rio flight. Electric reclining seats that go back so far you can lie down... 3 course meals... and a table cloth! Fuck yeah.

Bus from the airport to the hostel was a bit hairy cos I basically had no clue where I was most of the time, but when we hit Copacabana it was fairly obvious - and will be more obvious for Sal cos she'll be coming in in the daytime. Takes a while to get here so hopefully will be up to meet her tomorrow morning. Just spent the last hour in the bar where I bumped into some of the english staff who work here and had a couple of beers with them, talking about travel and stuff. And how hairy the border crossing from Brazil->Peru might be..!

Bad news is somehow my backpack opened itself in transit (my own fault for not tightening the cord around the neck properly) and the bloody Lonely Planet guide has been lost. Wasn't anyone thieving cos my camera's still there. The hostel has a book swap going on though so maybe I'll be able to swap City of God for another guide, we'll see.

Really looking forward to seeing Sal tomorrow. It's fun being here by yourself but also a wee bit intimidating... all good so far though. Ciao!

Last day in Oban!

Had a fun night out last night with the Sal's uni mates and the Oban posse. This is my last post while I'm in the UK, the next one will probably be from Rio. Think I have everything packed more or less. Tickets, passport etc are in there, and I've started taking the anti-malarials. Just about to watch England play Ecuador... that's it for now I think! Brain's fuzzy from last night's antics, so I've probably forgotten something...!
